Missing the gasoline-soaked point

Not to get all political on you, but the debate over gas prices is driving me slowly insane. Shouldn't our esteemed leaders be talking about ways we can reduce our dependency on oil rather than finding ways to make it cheaper? Perhaps I'm being especially dense here but, um, aren't they just perpetuating the problem?

I know it's easy to say this given that I make a decent amount of money and live in a city with wonderful mass transit, but maybe gas should be expensive. Sort of like a pack of cigarettes. You want to drive an SUV? OK. Pay for it. Cheap oil is not a birthright, unless you were born in Saudi Arabia.

Being really patriotic, I see renewable fuel sources as our duty to ourselves as U.S. citizens, apart from our duty to the environment. If we don't have to depend on unstable countries for fuel, great, and it's even better if we don't have to tear up Alaska to fuel things either. On another, similar note, wait and watch- the big push for environmentally friendly products will come from fundamentalist Christians. It's good stewardship in their eyes, from what I am told. What would Jesus drive? A bike?

That reminds me of my favorite Portland bumper sticker: "Who Would Jesus Bomb?"

In answer to the bumper sticker question, according to the Bible story Jesus went into the temple and threw out corrupt leaders and money changers. So my best guess is Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and numerous priests.

Jesus must be too tired from overseeing sporting events, Math tests and SATs to bomb anyone.
