legally speaking

I can't tell you how angry I was in the hospital after The Boy's birth in North Carolina when they told me I couldn't put AnnaRay's name on the birth certificate. I was tempted to write it in anyway, as my own little personal protest, but apparently that would have rendered it invalid. It makes me angry now just thinking about it.

Now here in Portland, we have a legal document that says Anna loves the child. It is an undisputeable fact; we have it notarized and everything. It seems ridiculous, and yet I got a little weepy in the lawyer's office just reading that line before signing the adoption papers.

It's weird that I should get so emotional about what the government has to say about our family's relationship. Why should I care that one state refuses to acknowledges that my partner is also my child's parent and another declares her to be his loving mother?

Hmph.

If I may digress.. this is why I do not believe in the institution that is marriage in this country.

I know I know.. but hear me out..

Understanding that getting married is a prudent move for a couple simply for the legal ramifications, medical emergencies, what have you.. It's only that way because we accept that to be the case. I say we tell them all to go to hell. Tell them that they have no power over who we love and on what terms we do it. I say we recognize that marriage is a religious institution and that no one can tell me that I can't love another adult! I say we.. what's that..

preaching to the choir?

my bad.. carry on.

I agree with you on principle, dear bro. Not sure I agree in practice. I mean, yeah, marriage should be left up to churches, synagogues, etc. But at the same time, if a married heterosexual couple is going to get a deal on a second driver at the Hertz counter because of their legal status, I want me some of that.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE it when Judybat gets angry?

I guess my point is that until you get that sweet Hertz discount, I want nothing to do with it.

Aw. That's so sweet. And sort of Ghandian. Passive resistance rules!

Unlike Ghandi though, I believe in receiving medical attention for myself AND my loved ones.. hell why not.. let's give it to everyone!

What are you, some kinda communist?

If it's communist to think that the richest country in the world should have none of its inhabitants hungry or without medical care, then sure.. why not.

I prefer to think of it as advanced watershed economics.
